Helena native Marcus Welnel always had a strong connection to the University of Montana.

“I’ve just always been a huge Griz fan,” Welnel said.

Growing up, he attended Griz games with his family and dreamed of playing football in college. When it came time to think seriously about his future, Welnel had to consider more than just athletics.

“Once I got older, I had to start thinking about academics as well. I did a lot of research into that, and the business school was so renowned and such a good program,” he explained. “That combination of being able to play football and go to the business school was a great opportunity.”

He considered moving east to attend Columbia, but the allure of the Ivy League couldn’t compare to all that the Treasure State has to offer.

“I love Montana way too much,” said Welnel.

As a student at UM, Welnel fulfilled his dream of playing Griz football – even donning the legendary No. 37 jersey in his final season. He stayed busy off the field, too, earning a bachelor’s degree in finance, with minors in mathematics and economics.

“I’ve always been a huge numbers guy. I have a very analytical brain,” Welnel said.

He went on to earn his master’s in business administration, and due to an extra year of eligibility, he finished up with another master’s of science in business analytics.

While his time as a student athlete at UM was certainly challenging, Welnel wouldn’t change it for the world.

“It was difficult at times, but it’s also so fun to be able to do that with all your teammates,” he said.

He graduated in 2023, but Welnel is staying connected to the UM community in his new role as general manager of UM’s Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) collective, Good Ol’ Grizzlies. He found his way to the job after completing a Capstone project focused on NIL and taking a consultant position for a national NIL company. Welnel acts as the face of the collective in Missoula, brokering deals and offering resources for local businesses and student athletes.

“I want to establish a program that can last awhile,” he said. “Something that the student athletes and the University can get behind.”

His distinguished resume led to Welnel’s recognition as one of UMAA’s inaugural 25 under 25 recipients last year. The honor emphasized his connection to the UM community and reaffirmed his goals for his early career.

“To be honored with that coming right out of college was a really big deal for me,” he acknowledged.

Welnel is making a big impact post-college, and he believes success comes from the heart.

“Do what you’re passionate about,” he said. “If you truly don’t love what you do there’s no reason to do it.”
