America is facing a crisis of doubt where many people seem not to know what to believe or whom to trust. This has led to disbelief in the widely accepted scientific claim that climate change is happening. A growing number of parents refuse to vaccinate children. Social media and emerging technologies allow the fabrication and dissemination of news that is false.

Kristen Intemann, professor of philosophy at Montana State University, will examine what it means to believe responsibly, why it is difficult to do so, and what we might be able to do to combat misinformation and doubt.

Her research and teaching focus on ethical issues related to evidence and science, including biomedical and environmental ethics. Her book, “The Fight Against Doubt: How to Bridge the Gap Between Scientists and the Public,” was published in 2018.

She has won awards for her teaching and research. She is director of the Initiative for Science, Technology, Ethics and Society at MSU. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Washington.
